How It All Began

I was born in Birmingham in the 60s and made my first marks on clay aged 11, in the first year of secondary school. This was a one off experience until the age of 15, when I attended a summer school at the Midlands Arts Centre, where I discovered the Ceramics department and the joys within. The wheels were now in motion.

My career started in the 80s with a degree from Wolverhampton Polytechnic and has spanned the decades since, working both in the studio and the classroom.  After a foundation at Bournville Art college, Birmingham and a BA at Wolverhampton Polytechnic, I started my journey, moving from my first studio near Lichfield, to Dorset, when I married in 1987. I set up my next studio in Stour Row, Shaftesbury, at the home of my husband’s parents, where I worked for the next 5 years. Little did I know that this was to become the home of my final studio years later.

My teaching career started when I was invited to teach back at my foundation college, doing 1 day a week in adult education and then at the Industrial Ceramics and Glass course at Birmingham Polytechnic. After having 3 children, I started working at Port Regis Prep School, Dorset, in 1993, initially doing maternity cover and evening classes but which then developed into running the Ceramics department from 2005 until 2022. In 2016, my husband and I moved to our current home where I set up my studio upon retiring from teaching in 2022. This was my husband’s parents’ home where I had previously run my studio. I had come full circle.

Since 2022 I have been dedicating all my focus to developing my studio work. As well as throwing functional vessels for the home, I also coil on a large scale for the garden and produce a small range of hand modelled pieces. However, the teacher in me remains very much alive and kicking. I am keen to see hopes and dreams become reality. So, I now offer lessons for all abilities (particularly beginners) in my studio. See ‘Tuition’ for more information.
